Note: the saddle in the photo was not my saddle, but looks the same.
This Russell Day-Long saddle is the most comfortable seat I have ever sat on. Period. The Corbin saddle I purchased later for an FZ-1 was not even in the same comfort league with the Russell, nor was it finished with the same attention to detail.
My longest day on the saddle was 750 miles, Albany NY to Cary NC in about 14 hours. Never did the seat get even slightly uncomfortable. The saddle cost me about $350 with shipping. If you ride one of the more popular touring oriented mounts, there is a good chance they will have a seat pan to build the seat on and they will ship you a complete seat. For an offbeat bike like the TDM-850, forget it.
I bought a stock '92 TDM-850 seat that was the wrong color, not that it mattered. I sent this to Russell along with the required measurements and pictures of me sitting on the bike (all outlined on their web site) and ordered black vinyl. A few months later I got my new saddle in the mail. Ooh la la. It was my intention to use the Russell for long trips only. I never rode on the stock saddle again.
The width and shape of the saddle combine to support your weight where it doesn't hurt. Instead of the center of your ass bearing the weight, your outer buttocks and thighs do a lot of the supporting. The resulting shape has "wings" that some have called unattractive, but the saddle has a rugged, classic "tractor saddle" look I find acceptable.
Having a 33 inch inseam helped me love the saddle because it did add a perceived two inches or so to the seat height. I say perceived because in addition to the actual inch or so of height added (you are supported by the seat, not sunk down sitting on the seat pan) the width of the seat makes reaching the ground a little harder, although they take this into account and make the front portion of the saddle narrower so you can slide forward to reach the ground more easily if seat height is an issue. The seat height was not an issue for me on the 32 inch TDM, but I'm not sure how well I could use it on a very tall bike like the 35 inch KLR650.
