1996 Kawasaki KLX650C

Additions and modifications

The KLX650 was my only bike for eighteen months. I did lots of types of riding with it and enjoyed its more dirt oriented stature compared to most dual sport bikes now available (XR650L and a KTM or two being the exceptions). Although the KLX650 is a little underpowered on the road it handles quite well. Alternatives I considered at the time were the XR650L, DR650, and KLR650. The KLR was $1000 cheaper at the time but more road oriented. I chose the eleven inches of travel offered by the KLX forks and the narrower seat and tank. The single cylinder engine produces around 48 hp, with about 38 at ther rear wheel -- about the same as the KLR. But the gas tank held only 3.2 gallons and allowed for more offroad maneuverability being much narrower. Fork dive when the front brake is grabbed. And the seat became very uncomfortable very quickly. Not quite DRZ-400 uncomfortable, but close. The KLX C model (street legal) was last sold in the U.S. as a 1996 model.
